Powervault has partnered with Mixergy, Upside Energy, Eden Project and University of Oxford for an exciting and innovative trial.

We are undertaking an exciting project to use Powervault's intelligent home storage system as a demand side response mechanism, which will help National Grid balance supply and demand of electricity. The project will demonstrate the potential for individuals to provide balancing services to the power industry and the ability to improve energy efficiency in the home.

Benefits of electrical storage

Home battery technology is growing in popularity and improving fast. Powervault enables the customer to cut their electricity bills and reduce carbon emissions by storing free solar energy generated by rooftop photovoltaic arrays and/or cheap, off-peak electricity to use when they need it.

Historically, the cost of Lithium-ion batteries has been high, but these costs are rapidly decreasing thanks to their use in an ever-increasing range of applications – from mobile phones to electric vehicles. This trial aims to prove the benefits of the first truly affordable, green electricity storage product for the U.K. market.

Purpose of the trial

The Pete Project will install 500 intelligent hot water tanks and 100 Powervault lithium-ion storage systems in households across Cornwall and London before July 2019, with the intention of installing 50 batteries at the beginning of 2018. The project aims to demonstrate a new method to reduce CO2 emissions, generate fresh revenue streams for individuals, and improve energy usage, with various sustainable technologies working together as a group to balance the electricity grid.
