Powervault has partnered with Renault, M&S Energy, Solarcentury and three major housing providers for an exciting and innovative trial. We are upcycling ‘used’ Lithium-ion cells from electric vehicles, and repurposing these for home electricity storage, helping customers cut their bills and carbon emissions.

Benefits of electricity storage

Domestic battery storage is a fast growing technology that enables the customer to cut their electricity bills and reduce carbon emissions by storing power from their solar or cheap overnight electricity to use when they need it.

Historically, the cost of Lithium-ion batteries has been high, but these costs are rapidly decreasing thanks to their use in a wider and wider range of applications – from mobile phones to electric vehicles. This trial aims to prove the benefits of the first truly affordable, green electricity storage product for the U.K. market.

Purpose of the trial

Batteries slowly degrade through use over time, which reduces the amount of electricity they can store. In electric vehicles this reduces the driving range of each charge, so they need to be replaced after 5-8 years. However, there is still plenty of useful life in these batteries for stationary applications, such as electricity storage for homes and businesses.

By unpacking used electric vehicle batteries, recycling any materials that can’t be used, and repackaging the good cells, Powervault have developed an upcycled, long-life battery pack for home electricity storage. Following extensive lab testing and refinement, this trial will measure the performance of the first units in people’s homes. Product benefits include:

Use more of your solar powerBetter for the environment. End-of-life electric vehicle batteries are normally incinerated and recycled, which is an energy-intensive process. Maximising their usage beforehand is good for the environment, reducing carbon emissions and demand for lithium.

Use more of your solar powerCheaper home electricity storage. By sourcing our materials from recycled battery packs we can deliver a battery unit that is >30% cheaper for the customer in future. This means many more households in the U.K. will be able to benefit from storing their ‘home-grown’ electricity.

Powervault aims to provide a financed home electricity storage product, in which customers will benefit from battery storage provided by their energy supplier at no upfront cost, paid for through their energy bill savings over time.

Use more of your solar powerSaving money while saving the environment. We hope this first-of-a-kind concept will help develop a mass market for upcycled, Second Life batteries. It will reduce recycling costs for electric vehicle manufacturers and reduce material costs for products such as Powervault. This means cheaper electric vehicles and more home electricity storage for all.

There are a limited number of units available in this trial. Participants will be selected on a first come first served basis subject to the following requirements.

  1. You must be an M&S Energy electricity customer, or a tenant of Hyde Housing or the Royal Borough of Greenwich.
  2. You must either be an existing owner of solar photovoltaic panels (generating electricity) before July 2017, or have a time-of-use tariff such as Economy 7 – or both!
  3. You must have an internet connection within your home and be willing to keep the Powervault connected for the duration of the 12-month trial (data usage 13MB/month).
  4. You must have space for the Powervault in your home (85cm high x 50cm wide x 58cm deep – about the size of an under-counter washing machine)
  5. You must agree to our Terms and Conditions

Time line:

The trial will last for 12 months:

  • August – September 2017: 50 eligible participants will be selected to take part
  • September- Octoboer 2017: approved installers will install the devices in your home, free of charge
  • October 2017 – September 2018: Powervault will remotely monitor the units and will ask you to fill in some short questionnaires. You’ll also get real-time updates on your electricity usage via an online dashboard
  • September 2018: At the end of the trial we’ll share our findings with you, and you’ll have the option either to keep the device free of charge or ask for it to be removed.
